Ho Polytechnic has launched a charity fund to support needy but brilliant students and the physically challenged in the Polytechnic.
The fund dubbed Dean of Students(DOS) Fund would also be used to support female students in faculties perceived to be preserves for male students. This is to promote gender parity in Engineering and Science education within the Polytechnic.
According to the Dean of students -Ben Quarshie Honyenuga, the rationale behind the setting up the fund is to help students who are faced with financial challenges. He noted some of the students find it difficult to pay their fees, foot their hospital bills, rent among other things.
The Office of the Dean of students in conjunction with the Students representative council(SRC) conceived the idea a year ago and sought the approval of the Polytechnic Council as well as the academic board.
The fund will be administered by the Dean of Students Foundation Board chaired by the Rector of the Polytechnic- Dr. Jakpasu Victor Kofi Afun.
Deserving students would have the opportunity to apply for support which will be scrutinized by the Foundation Board.
The Deputy Volta regional minister Francis Ganyaglo, who was the guest of honour for the launch, expressed government's commitment to tertiary education and hints of plans to build a three-storey faculty of block for the faculty of business. An alumnus and former lecturer in the Polytechnic himself, Francis Ganyaglo said the Volta region Coordinating council is serious discussion with the GETFund and lobbying for the project.
An amount of twelve thousand Ghana cedis (GHc 12,000.00) was raised during the launching. Twelve thousand Ghana cedis (GHc 12,000.00) has already accrued to the fund through students' levy, making a total of twenty four thousand Ghana cedis (GHc 24000.00 )as the seed capital for the fund.
The rector of the Polytechnic Jakpasu Victor Affun appealed for support for the fund from corporate organizations and Alumni to help sustain the noble initiative.
