A Circuit Court in Accra on Monday ordered the arrest of a trader, Patience Konadu, for allegedly using a blade to inflict wounds on her 16 year-old son. Konadu, who failed to appear in Court when the case was called is said to have accused the victim of stealing her money totalling GH¢ 150. Konadu, now pregnant is facing a charge of causing harm. She inflicted the wound on the boy’s right arm, palm and thigh. Jones Nkansah, the victim’s father, who failed to assist the victim to seek medical attention after the ordeal, is being held for abetment of crime. Nkansah, a security man, pleaded not guilty. The court, presided over by Mrs Ivy Heward-Mills remanded him into Police custody to reappear on December 9. When the matter was called, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Lawrence Gbele showed the picture of deep wounds on the victim, saying the matter was a serious one and therefore prayed for a bench warrant to arrest Konadu. But Nkansah’s lawyer pleaded with the court to rescind the bench warrant since Konadu was saddled with a pregnancy-related ailment hence her inability to appear in court. According to defence counsel, the victim had written to the police to have the matter resolved amicably and expressed surprise when he was informed that the matter was being brought to court. The court after examining the picture of the victim’s wounds rejected defence counsel’s plea. ASP Gbele said the victim, aged 16, is a student who resided with his father and his step mum at Osu in Accra. On November 7, Kondau complained to her husband that her GH¢ 70 was missing. The prosecution said Konadu accused Nkansah of stealing the money but he denied it. On November 13, Konadu alleged that the victim had stolen GH¢ 80 cedis again. In the night, while the victim was sleeping Konadu woke him up and confronted him over the theft. The prosecution said during the confrontation Konadu inflicted deep cuts on the victim’s right hand and arm as well as right thigh with a blade. ASP Gbele said the victim who became afraid of further assault fled to hide in a nearby church. Nkansah who was away at work returned but failed to attend to the victim after Konadu had told her about the incident. The prosecution said some relatives assisted the victim to report the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service. Source: GNA
