Mr Prosper Klu, Birim Central Municipal Extension Officer, has expressed worry about the importation of grains, vegetables and other food crops, into the country.
“With Ghana’s rich and abundant land, it is regrettable that hard earn foreign currencies is being used to import food yearly”.
Mr Klu therefore appealed to the government to invest more into agriculture to make Ghana self-sufficient in food production.
He was speaking with GNA’s Media Auditing and Development tracking team at Akyem Oda.
The GNA, STAR-Ghana Media Auditing and Tracking of Development projects, is an initiative launched to promote social accountability and good governance.
He noted that the importation of food items into Ghana, partly accounts for the depreciation of the Cedi.
“Rice being produced at Aveyime is of good quality like those coming from countries such as Thailand, but due to inadequate investment, farmers are not able to produce enough to meet the demands of the consuming public” he noted.
Mr Klu appealed to government to subsidize fertilizer for farmers to help them maximize their production.
