A standoff between the Asuogyaman District Assembly in the Eastern region and Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Kofi Osei Ameyaw over the lorry station at Senchi, has left transport operators there stranded.
The lorry station at Senchi was built by the MP, who has as a private holding area. But the District Assembly says the law is against individuals operating lorry station.
Speaking to Joy News, the District Chief Executive for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem-Nyarko accused the Legislator of illegally collecting monies from the transport operators including what is due the Assembly for the past month.
“The report I heard from the drivers’ union is that the MP came and seized the station and took over the collection of all the monies including the parking toll that comes to the assembly…For the past one month, all the revenue including what must come to the assembly is with the MP,” the DCE alleged.
The failure of the assembly and the MP to reach an amicable public private partnership has resulted in an inconvenient relocation of the transport operators.
“Our law is such that individuals cannot operate a lorry station,” the DCE maintained.

Mr. Ampem-Nyarko said a meeting convened recently on his orders to resolve the impasse yielded no meanwhile, the MP, Kofi Osei Ameyaw has however, said the facility is not a lorry station but a private lorry park he built.
He said the assembly and transport unions can use it only after agreement on how to share revenue is reached.
“All parties that will have interest in operating at the facility that we have invested must declare their interest so that we work in an equitable, accountable and transparent manner and then if there’s going to be any division of revenue that is accruing, we will know in a transparent and an accountable manner what goes where.
“If that cannot work then I will not be prepared to go and invest money in something and others will come and reap where they have not sown,” the MP stated.

Government earlier this year provided two boats to ferry vehicles from Akrade across the Volta River at Senchi following the closure of the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku for rehabilitation works.
The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) estimates repair works on the bridge to be completed by March 2016.
