Four policemen alleged to have robbed a Ghanaian businessman, Kweku Duah of his money and personal effects have been interdicted while four other other accomplices on the run are being hunted. Acting Inspector General of Police, Mrs. Elizabeth Mills-Robertson ordered the interdiction of the four; DSP Kwapong of the Rapid Deployment Force of the Police Service; Chief Inspector Thomas Adu of the Panthers Unit, Police Headquarters; Gen. Cpl. Dennis Quansah of the Police Headquarters and General Sgt. John Agyapong also of the Panthers Unit for their alleged involvement in the robbery and extortion at a hotel in Accra. According to Police Public Affairs Director, DSP Kwesi Ofori, the interdiction of the accused persons is to assist investigations into the case. The Assistant Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, ACP Bright Oduro, admitted police complicity in the crime and said the two of the four suspects on the run are also policemen. “Kwame Atta who is at large and one other Nigerian he went to the hotel with. Then there are two others; they are mentioning a soldier and one other civilian but our information is that there are two other policemen we have not also contacted.” Bright Oduro said the four interdicted policemen who have had their statements taken are refusing to tell who the other two policemen are “so it is true. We believe that some monies were taken away from him and the items also were taken away from him because the police actually went there to do their own thing.” He said at the time of the ‘operation’, so many phone calls took place between the interdicted police and those on the run to suggest strongly they were in cahoots for their personal benefits. The Ghanaian businessman, who is based in the UK, told Joy News’s Sammy Darko that the arrested policemen, with the aid of one Kwame Atta who had come to him to do business, beat him up when he attempted to escape from his hotel room where he was first attacked. Later the police tried to blackmail him by threatening to portray him as a drug dealer all in attempts to extort more money from him, and eventually abandoned him in Tema. Story by Isaac Yeboah
