A social commentator and activist of the New Patriotic Party, Ms Ursula Owusu is considering suing 3.5G mobile service operator, Zain Communications Group, for wrongfully dismissing her.
The former Corporate Affairs Director of Zain was given her walking papers in a letter dated January 9, 2009, for her involvement in politics.
Although the human rights advocate is said to have been highly instrumental in bringing Zain to Ghana, the company’s officials say her political involvement is contrary to the company’s policies.
The company said although it had made attempts to talk Ms Owusu out of her commentaries on radio and television, no consensus could be reached on the matter, culminating in her dismissal.
But speaking to the media on Friday, Ms Owusu who is also the president of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), said Zain’s action is an infringement on her constitutional rights.
Her comments also come days after a programme on GTV, on which she was a panelist, was abruptly truncated for politically unbalanced paneling.
She challenged Zain to present evidence of any harm her political activism might have caused the company.
“If they could show me any evidence of how harmful my activities were to the company, I would be the first to desist from it,” she demanded.
Ms Owusu however indicated that although “it is obvious they are not prepared to reconsider their decision,” she is still “weighing her options.”
She has since packed out of her Zain office.
