The former Minister for Information, Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng says the main purpose of the Ministry of Information is the dissemination of information from the government to the general public.
According to him the attachment of the National Orientation Ministry to the Information Ministry under the previous government, was very effective but unfortunately, the current administration has done away with the latter.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday, Mr. Boateng stated that the Ministry does not rely solely on what the president will say but rather coordinates with other Ministries, Departments and Agencies which help in the development of the country.
He therefore indicated that the Ministry of information can not be scrapped because it is a separate entity altogether. He added that the only problem he has with the new NDC government in terms of information is that a lot of people seem to be speaking on behalf of the president which brings about contradictions and counter information from all of them and it does not seem to be helping the government in terms of disseminating information to the people.
Mr. Asamoah Boateng was reacting to a call by Prof Kwame Karikari of the School of Communication, University of Ghana for the ministry to be scrapped since there are so many channels which disseminate information to the public.
The communication expert insisted that the ministry should be scrapped because unlike the past, there are so many channels of information; including the print and electronic media. He told Asempa FM that, aside the media the President has a lot of people who speak on his behalf and concluded that the Ministry of Information no longer serves any useful purpose.
