The Greater Accra Regional Minister has revealed his outfit will embark on a massive decongestion exercise to rid the capital of filth.
Nii Armah Ashittey who is also the MP for Korle Clottey Constituency in Accra lamented the activities of street hawkers in the city and pledged government’s commitment to regulate their activities.
Previous governments for fear of losing elections have shown less commitment in fully implementing the decongestion exercise.
In cases where traders have been relocated from the streets into newly built markets, they are allowed back onto the streets ahead of crucial elections.
This the minister said must cease. He concedes the exercise will be opposed by different interest groups but gave the assurance government will go ahead to implement the policy.
He said the exercise if undertaken “will be good for the generality of the people.”
On “Sodom and Gomora,” the established slum in Accra, the minister hinted a collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Housing to relocate the residents.
“There is no case study anywhere in the world where people do not resist any attempt to relocate them,” he said, adding the people must be educated.
