Calm has returned to the Northern Regional capital Tamale following violent clashes between two factions in the ruling National Democratic Congress.
It unclear what precipitated the clashes even though sources cite an incident that humiliated the regional Chairman of the NDC.
Alhaji Sumani Zakari was pulled out of the Vice President’s convoy at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
The incident infuriated many supporters of the NDC including the Chairman who felt deeply embarrassed.
The clashes are said to be a reaction to the ‘maltreatment’ of Alhaji Zakari.
The Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Moses Mabinga told Joy News the issue has been amicably settled with the two factions agreeing to work together.
Joy FM’s Northern Regional Correspondent, Mahama Shaibu quoted Moses Mabinga as saying the groups only used the incident involving the Regional Chairman as an immediate cause to settle personal scores.
According to Mahama Shaibu, the deputy Regional Minister denied Alhaji Zakari orchestrated the clashes.
Meanwhile the vice president’s office has apologised to Alhaji Zakari for the mishap that caused him some embarrassment.
