Two people are feared dead, Thursday after a gunman opened fire on scores of people at the Bawku market in the Upper East Region.
Several others were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Quality Medical Centre in Bawku.
A nurse who spoke to Joy News on condition of anonymity, said some of the injured persons have been treated and discharged.
The cause of the attack is not known. Reports however say residents are fleeing their homes, fearing the situation might degenerate.
The latest violence is a blot on peace efforts by security and government officials in the region.
The Bawku Municipality has been ravaged by endless ethnic violence between the Mamprusis and the Kusasis forcing officials to impose a curfew in the region.
Interior Minister Cletus Avoka expressed his utter dismay and disappointment to Joy News on the new outbreak but said the situation has been brought under control.
He said it was too early to tag the perpetrator of the attack as belonging to one ethnic group, saying the police will conduct investigations into the violence.
He hinted that the curfew situation might be sustained a while longer to ensure absolute peace in the region.
He however called on residents to let peace prevail as it constitutes the only panacea to sustained violence in the region.
