The Northern Regional Minister, Stephen Sumani Nayina, has appealed to the UNDP and other development partners to assist Regional Houses of Chiefs to function effectively.
He observed that the unresolved chieftaincy disputes in the Northern Region were among the causes of violence in the area and was hopeful that with adequate resources, the Regional House of Chiefs could stem the violence to facilitate development.
Mr Nayina made this appeal on last week when the UN Resident Coordinator, Dauda Toure, paid a courtesy call on him.
Mr. Toure and his entourage were in the region to acquaint themselves with the activities of the UN.
Mr. Nayina said the government was committed to ensuring peace and unity and would collaborate with agencies that would assist in that direction.
He, therefore, lauded the numerous support of the UNDP in peace-building efforts in the area.
He appealed for increased assistance in areas like education, stressing that quality education for the youth would help in the reduction of poverty among the people of the region.
Mr Nayina appealed for help in addressing some of the challenges facing farmers in the area.
