Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, has cautioned Members of Parliament (MPs) to desist from using mobile phones on the floor.
According to him, the act is distractive to the business of the house.
The Bantama MP raised the matter about MPs using their mobile phones on the floor during the business statement presentation in the House, Thursday.
Speaking on the floor, Mr Kyei-Mensah Bonsu disclosed that a proposal is enshrined in Parliament’s new standing orders that will seek to clamp down on the use of mobile phones when approved.
“A time is coming where no member will be allowed to bring cellphones into the Chamber. We need to demonstrate seriousness in this House. When the President of the Republic is talking, MPs are on the phone, when a Ministers are providing answers, MPs are on their phones. The Parliament of Ghana is not the only Parliament in the world,” he said.
He further stated that, “there are established Parliaments in the world who do not allow members to come to Parliament with their cellphones. That should be the way.”
“Mr Speaker, we should apply this religiously once we adopt the standing orders,” the Majority Leader added.
The suggestion has drawn varied reactions in the House.
MP for Boadi, Samson Ahi, is one of those who believes this call out of place.
“It will remain his suggestion because I don’t believe that Members of Parliament will agree with him. He himself has been making and receiving calls in the chamber. I think someone should remind him that we are not school children,” he told Joy News.
