The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, says Ghana generated more than $10.8 billion in foreign exchange from artisanal and small-scale mining gold alone, contributing significantly to the country’s foreign exchange market and reserve accumulation.
According to him, the gold purchases by GoldBod enabled the Bank of Ghana to intermediate about $10.6 billion into the foreign exchange market, helping to improve liquidity and support the stability of the cedi.
“We generated over $10.8 billion in foreign exchange from artisanal and small-scale mining gold alone. That helped the Bank of Ghana intermediate about $10.6 billion for the market,” Mr Gyamfi said.
He said the increased foreign exchange inflows also contributed to a significant appreciation of the Ghanaian currency, with the cedi recording an appreciation of more than 41 per cent during the period.
Mr Gyamfi further said Ghana’s international reserves improved substantially, rising from $8.9 billion to $13.8 billion by December 2025.
He made the remarks on JoyNews on Monday, August 10, 2026, while discussing the impact of GoldBod’s operations on Ghana’s foreign exchange market and broader economy.
