The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called for the suspension of non-urgent and elective surgical procedures since it could populate the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a statement issued by the Association on Monday, the directive is to decongest various ICUs and High Dependency Units (HDUs) since there could be an increase demand for the wards.
“We call on doctors and mangers of health care systems to take immediate steps towards decongestion of these units in all health care facilities across the country.”
It further commended government for implementing the preventive measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus and demanded provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and essential logistics to frontline health workers as the fight against coronavirus has commenced.
