An equipment operator at Meridian Port Services is self-isolating as his second suspected Covid-19 test results returned positive despite testing negative in an earlier assessment.
Port authorities are awaiting the results of the third test from Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
Confirming the information, General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Esther Gyebi Donkoh says the necessary steps are being been taken.
“It is true we have a suspected case within the port. The person is an equipment operator at MPS terminal. The third samples have been collected and currently awaiting results.
“There is however no need to press the panic button yet. Equipment and terminal are being disinfected. Health authorities within the Tema metropolis and the National COVID Team have been informed,” she added.
According to her, colleagues of the suspected case have also been informed and contacting tracing is underway starting from those who were on the same shift with him followed by other MPS staff.
As the port plays a key role in the country’s economic life, authorities are handling this issue with all the attention it deserves.
Since Ghana first recorded cases of Covid-19 and the partial lockdown, the company has instituted a business continuity plan to ensure safety of both employees and all other stakeholders.
The company has engaged in various activities including constant disinfection, providing hygiene products for employees and sharing communication so as to prevent any infection on the terminal and outside.
All employees have since been informed and have asked to observe all necessary precautionary measures including social distancing.
