A new study has revealed that the majority of West African itinerant immigrant retailers in Accra intend to stay in Ghana temporarily, with family and friendship networks playing a decisive role in their migration decisions.
The study, conducted by Professor Elijah Yendaw and published in the Journal of Identity and Migration Studies, surveyed 779 West African immigrant retailers across nine Accra neighbourhoods. It found that 85.6 per cent of respondents preferred temporary residence, while only 14.4 per cent intended to stay permanently.
The research, which was presented as a policy brief at the 6th Research and Development Conference of the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), examined how socio-demographic characteristics and social networks shape immigrants' intentions to remain in Ghana.
