Klottey Korle MP Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has charged government to fix drains at Odawna in the Greater Accra region.
This follows a fresh fatality in the area following flooding from Tuesday dawn’s downpour.
Houses have submerged and vehicles were washed into open drains as the residents rushed out to salvage what they could and also save their lives.
Speaking to JoyNews after the waters had largely subsided, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings said it is unacceptable for Odawna residents to endure the perennial floods.
She complained that the drains in the area are not completed despite government promising to do so when they held a Townhall meeting in the area.
“Lives and livelihoods are being destroyed and it is high time government steps in and take the necessary action,” she said.
She added, "It is not enough for government officials to come around every year and say sorry to the people."
The rains which started in the early hours of Tuesday lasted for over five hours, throwing the capital into a state of confusion with people salvaging what they can.
Many residents in and around the central business district have been left stranded and displaced.
At the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange and its adjoining areas, the downpour has also destroyed property worth thousands of cedis.
One person was confirmed dead at Odawna by Lt. Col. Michael Mfum from the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces during a rescue mission.
A joint team of military and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) went on the mission after torrential rains.
