Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured President Nana Akufo-Addo that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is committed to keeping a united front in the fight against separationist attempts by the Western Togoland Restoration Front in the Volta Region.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, October 7, 2020, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South described the activities of the rebel group as having the potential to cause harm to the stability of the country.
"There is an ugly threat to the stability, sovereignty and integrity of Ghana in the Volta Region.
"The President, as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, should be assured that he has the full support of the House to deal decisively and ruthlessly with the threat to the sovereignty and integrity of our country. We cannot afford a disunited Ghana,” he stated.
Meanwhile, about 60 persons suspected to be members of the secessionist group have been apprehended by police in connection with the recent acts of violence.
Out of that number, 54 have been remanded in custody, as security operations in the Region are intensified in order to ensure discontinuity in the attacks.
A video of how the Ghana Police Service retrieved items stolen by the suspected Volta secessionists has also surfaced on the internet.
