The flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has promised that her party if voted into office, will empower the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to do more in educating Ghanaians on governance.
Speaking on the AM Show on Joy News, Monday, Brigitte Dzogbenuku stated that per their observations, the NCCE lacked the resources needed to perform their mandate effectively.
“I wish that the NCCE will be better resourced to educate people, and that is one thing the PPP will do when we are in government, that's to resource the NCCE.”
Furthermore, the PPP as a governing party, according to Brigitte, would empower Ghanaians to choose their leaders at the local level.
“Ghanaians have been made to remain in fear to pursue their own dream of what they want Ghana to be, and a typical example is an opportunity that was taken away from Ghanaians to vote for their own local leaders; DCEs and MMDCEs,” she said.
“There’s heavy cry in our communities and nobody is held accountable because the DCE is appointed.”
Brigitte Dzogbenuku observed that governments over the years have taken advantage of a perceived notion that Ghanaians are "ignorant" of governance-related issues.
“I think that governments have enjoyed, for the lack of a better word, the ignorance or miseducation of the Ghanaian in matters of politics or governance so that the less they know the more dedicated they are to either of them [NDC and NPP].”
According to her, past governments often tend to rule rather than govern the people, and if voted into power, the PPP would govern differently by taking a second look at the fundamentals of Ghana's constitution and making the corrections from there.
"The main way we are doing things differently is we're going back to revisit the fundamentals of the Constitution and change them.”
