Leading Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Haruna Iddrisu says Ghana’s democracy has come under severe attack following the declaration by the Electoral Commission, Wednesday, that Candidate Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has won the 2020 Presidential elections.
According to him, the circumstances surrounding the victory of candidate Akufo-Addo in the just ended general elections is a heavy blow to the democracy of Ghana and thus the country “needs some rescue urgently.”
He said, “If not rescued, this attack will fester and grow into future elections and that will disfigure our track record as a true democratic nation.”
His comments follow the outright rejection and resistance of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections result by the NDC citing electoral malfeasance in certain areas including Techiman South.
According to Haruna Iddrisu, efforts by NDC flagbearer, John Mahama to have the cited malfeasance remedied before any substantive pronouncement was made about the election results were blatantly ignored by the EC chair.
“It is even regrettable to note that this evening before her declaration, John Dramani Mahama contested the election as a candidate and therefore a stakeholder and interested party.
"Even when he filed a petition to the Electoral Commission detailing his concerns in the process of collation leading to a declaration, that was treated with the utmost contempt. That we consider unacceptable,” he stated.
Haruna Iddrisu stated that “the overwhelming evidence available to us makes it impossible for us to accept this spurious and hurried conclusion of the Electoral Commission of Ghana” and thus will vehemently reject and resist the results of the elections as declared.
He added that the NDC intends “to take decisive and concrete steps both with the Presidential and Parliamentary results to overturn this brazen and shameless attack on our fledgling democracy.”
He concluded that the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama will in due course address the country and the international community concerning the electoral malfeasance that culminated into the NPP victory with hard evidence.
