Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame says his office will take action against public officials who are responsible for judgements debts the state is required to pay.
He told Senior Justices of Ghana’s Supreme Court that the state incurs such debts on some occasions due to the failure of some officials to cooperate with his office to enable a proper defense to be mounted.
Mr. Dame on Monday met Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah and Senior Judges of the Supreme Court, Jones Dotse, Paul Baffoe Bonnie, and Marful Sau to discuss issues affecting justice delivery in Ghana.
The judges had concerns about the conduct of state prosecutors that results in cases dragging for years.
They said it is often a regular feature for the Attorney-General’s representatives to be asking for more time to file responses to cases.
But responding to the issue, Mr. Dame said this is sometimes as a result of non-cooperation of public officials.
He said the constitutional arrangement makes his office the defendant in actions against the state, and claims of tort involving state officials.
He added that a way to deal with this will be to take action against officials who do not assist his office with the neccessary information to build a strong defense in the state's interest.
