Lawyer at Legal Relief Trust, Theophilus Donkor Esq. has observed that efforts by the Ghana Police Service to curb road accidents have been hindered by the use of old breathalyzers.
According to the Managing Partner of Legal Relief Trust, “our Police do not have the current equipment to detect the alcohol levels. They are still using the old equipment, so it becomes difficult for the Police.
"We normally test the alcohol level. If the alcohol content in your breath is above the normal range, it means you have breached the law. Once you are under the influence of alcohol, you are not allowed to drive."
Speaking to JoyNews' Joseph Ackah-Blay on 'The Law', Mr Donkor stated that it gets bad when the shortfall is not compensated with the deployment of enough Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) personnel on the road to monitor drivers.
"The Police are not many on the road. The MTTD, they are not many on the road to check some of these things, so the drivers get away with some of these things."
For this reason, the Legal practitioner urged Government and the Police Service to work together in other to not only provide safety on the streets but also reduce the number of deaths, due to vehicular accidents recorded in the country.
