Associate Professor at the University of Ghana, Professor Eric Osei-Assibey, has called for a review of levies imposed on LPG and other petroleum products.

Speaking during Monday's edition of JoyFM's Super Morning show, the Professor noted that some of the levies are mere duplications of already existing ones.

"As a country, I think the time has come for us to look at some of the taxes that have been imposed on LPG and petroleum prices because in my minded view, some of them are just a repetition of the same levy."

He cites for instance, "the LPG build up price, the Energy sector recovery levy and the Energy debt recovery levy are all levies talking about the same thing."

The topic for discussion was the current state of the economy and how Ghanaians are coping.

Professor Eric Osei-Assibey also noted that the kind of taxes being imposed by the Akufo-Addo led administration are regressive.

“For example, the levies or the taxes that have been imposed. Many of it, in my view are quite regressive. Especially when you over concentrate on VAT, you’d realize that it’s the poor that ends up paying more within the big cities," he said.

He further noted that the regressive nature of the new levies and taxes imposed is taking a toll on the already meagre incomes of the ordinary Ghanaian.

This situation, if not addressed, he said, will in turn, widen the inequality gap and result in people complaining in the process.
