The country's National Case Management Coordinator for Severe and Critical Covid-19 cases, Dr Christian Owoo, has disclosed that the number of critical cases is rising at an alarming rate.
Speaking to Nortey Dua on Joy FM's Ultimate Health on Sunday, he noted that the system will be overwhelmed if things continue at the current rate.
There have been reports that beds at Ghana's Intensive Care Units (ICU) are getting full.
However, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, has doubted these reports.
Dr Christian Owoo disclosed that the system may soon be overwhelmed.
"About two weeks ago, the few cases we had, started doubling in a matter of days. If it continues on that trajectory, it does not matter how much we try to sugarcoat things.
"This is because eventually, the system will be overwhelmed not only with respect to human resources but even material resources", he noted.
Dr Christian Owoo stated that although the cases are doubling, they are capable of taking care of such patients.
This is a position that has been affirmed by a Virologist at the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research, Dr Michael Owusu.
Dr Owusu has warned that if urgent actions are not taken by government and the ordinary people, to enforce adherence to the protocols, more cases and deaths will be recorded.
"Once we know that we have a new strain in the system, it will hit the peak before it comes down. It looks as if this is what has started and there's no doubt we are in a full-blown third wave."
He added, "If action is not taken by way of change in human behaviour [adherence to Covid-19 protocols] and from the government [policy], we should expect a rapid increase in cases and possible deaths."
