Madina MP and Human Rights lawyer, Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu has been named the recipient of this year's Timothy Bowles African Human Rights Leadership Award.
The award is in recognition of his activism as a human rights advocate in the last 10 years using the law as a major tool.
Mr Sosu is a member of the Ghana Bar Association, Africa Bar Association, International Association of Peoples Lawyers, Lawyers Without Borders, Canada, Criminal Justice Reforms Association and Lawyers In search of Democracy.
He has through advocacy both in and out of court upheld the rights of many in the Ghanaian society especially the poor and less privileged.
As a Christian leader, the legislator has also capitalised on the message of the gospel to rally Christians and Christian leaders around to ensure that persons whose rights are trampled upon seeking redress and recompense.
In less than 6 months into his term as a Member of Parliament, Lawyer Sosu has introduced two new bills which deal with compensation for wrongful arrest, detention, prosecution and incarceration and also to abolish the death penalty. This has never happened in the history of Ghana's Parliament.
Dr Nina Meyerhof, President and founder of Children of the Earth and Timothy Bowles, International Human Rights Lawyer will formally present this award to Mr Sosu at Jacobs-Abbey Global Institute for Leadership Studies annual fundraising dinner and Awards Gala banquet at Hilton Alexandria Mark Center on Sat November 13, 2021.
Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu (ESQ), through his and immense contribution to the human rights struggle, has been called to serve in various capacities. He is currently the 2nd Vice President of the United Nations Association of Ghana.
The African Human Rights Leadership Campaign generates and conducts public awareness campaigns on abuses of articles of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, such as human trafficking, restricted access to justice and government corruption.
