The outcome of the 2021 Population and Housing Census indicates that a total of 229,628 children aged between 5 and 14 years are engaged in different forms of economic activities in Ghana.
Fresh data published by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) said out of the 229,628 children, 130,478 are males while 99,150 are females, translating into a share of 56.82% and 43.18% respectively.
Out of the same figure, 84% are located in rural areas while 16% are in urban areas.
A further analysis shows that 77.64% of these children are engaged in skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery.
The services and sales sector follow with a share of 7.44%. Craft and related trades as well as plant and machine operators, and assemblies also follow with 6.62% and 0.50% share respectively.
In both urban and rural areas, children engaged in skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery dominate across all five sectors identified with a corresponding percentage of 39% (in urban areas) and 85% (in rural areas).
