An assistant referee in the Ghana Premier League has been in the social media trends following his action in the league game between Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars on Sunday.
Theophilus Akugre, who was appointed as one of the assistant referees for the game at the Baba Yara Stadium, delivered the game's much talked about moment after he joined in the play in the build-up to Kotoko's second goal in the game.
Akugre, 29, joined the players on the field of play in the 35th minute of the game as Franck Mbella Etouga after receiving a pass from Richmond Lamptey set up Georges Mfegue for his second goal on the night.
The assistant referee was captured on video as he closely monitored the action while on the pitch. He stayed close to the action until the Cameroonian found the back of the net.
While many have interpreted the act of the referee as not being right, the FIFA rules Akugre's entrance into the field.
According to the FIFA rules for assistant referees, "the assistant referee may enter the field of play to help control the 9.15m (10 yards) distance."
With the centre referee not closer to the action, the 29-yar-old deemed it necessary to enter the field and monitor closely the action.
The Porcupine Warriors ended the game with a 5-0 scoreline over the Miners as they extended their lead at the top of the league table.
