Compassion International Ghana targets to offset over 2 million kilograms of carbon dioxide over the next decade by planting over 19,000 seedlings across 10 regions in Ghana.

This is in line with its environmental stewardship strategy and its contribution to the Green Ghana Day celebration.

The organization, as part of its drive, to complement the government's green Ghana initiative joined residents of Addo Nkwanta in the Akuapem-North Municipality of the Eastern Region to plant different species of trees.

They were supported by Chiefs, opinion leaders, school children and the clergy who all took turns planting a trees.

National Director of Compassion International Ghana, Kobina Okyere Yeboah said the Green Ghana Day is of great essence since it falls in line with the Environmental Stewardship programme of the organization.

According to him
Compassion International Ghana and its partners are so intentional about environmental stewardship that have been purposed to, among other things, plant trees on annual basis.

" I can assure you there are other groundbreaking initiatives towards continuing these efforts. We also commit to nurturing and monitoring the seedlings we plant so that they grow to meaningfully contribute to the preservation of our environment and all the numerous benefits that they come with. We do so using the kids on our programme by employing an initiative of one tree one child and utilize data so that they grow to meaningfully contribute to the preservation of our environment and all the numerous benefits that come with it," he explained.

He said " we also believe the biblical mandate to care for God’s creation gives us the responsibility to intentionally respond to this environmental stewardship challenge within our mission".

Speaking to Joy News on the sidelines of the event, Partnership Facilitator of Compassion Ghana, Sam Okoampa explained that planting trees prevents waterborne diseases including cholera and diarrhoea.

According to him, " the aim of the exercise is to protect the country's vegetation cover where we can have trees to protect the environment for generations unborn".

Compassion International Ghana is a Christ-centered organization engaged in transformative child advocacy and holistic (physical, cognitive, socio-emotional and spiritual) child development, particularly for children living in extreme poverty. The organization through its Church partners and global sponsors seek to break the chain of hardship by equipping children with the skills and resources that will improve their social status and benefit their communities.

In its 17 years of existence, over 90,000 kids have benefited from our programme. Compassion Ghana is part of an international global brand, Compassion International located in Colorado Springs, United States.

Through its mission, it is committed to honouring Christ in all that it does and equip them with the skills and resources needed to be resilient in the years to come.

Compassion International Ghana’s ethos falls on biblical principles as a para-church and the need to preserve the environment is one of them.

CIGH and her Partners believe that environmental stewardship is an important part of enabling children and youth to thrive and realize their God-given potential.

Compassion’s approach is to integrate environmental stewardship and creation care efforts into our existing program model, and not as separate initiatives.

The goal is to ensure the environmental sustainability of programme activities and outcomes to achieve Compassion’s overall mission of ‘releasing children from poverty
