Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has urged politicians to inspire people during campaigns instead of giving out money.
As a presidential aspirant of the NPP, he believes instilling confidence in the people is more relevant than anything.
In an interview with Roselyn Felli on Prime Morning Wednesday, he indicated that the act of giving out money during campaigns is devaluing the essence of politics.
For this reason, he is of the opinion that the electorates should be allowed to honestly select a political leader.
“We expect all those of us, who are aspiring to the highest office to go round the country, hit the dirt, roll our sleeves, dirty ourselves and send a trudging message to the electorates. Go and tell them why they should invest political authority in you and that’s all that matters to me…”
“More so, I think because we’ve lost a lot of the values that brought forth the political tradition and instead of just going around distributing money, we should distribute inspiration. We should inspire confidence,” he explained.
Having been the Press Secretary to President John Kufuor from 2001 to 2006 and being passionate about the growth of the country, he believes the country's development does not lie in the hands of only politicians but in all citizens.
Speaking about the embezzlement of funds in the country, Ing. Kwabena Agyapong urged that order and discipline must be imposed to help in the development of the country.
He urged the leadership of NDC and NPP to ensure their conduct instills confidence in Ghanaians.
Using the recent conflict among the NDC members during the youth delegates conference, he said “I do hope that all political parties will not go that far. Politics is not about life and death, it’s about service.”
When asked why he decided to contest the NPP flagbearership election, he replied “I want to see far-reaching changes in our country.”
Touching on the state of the economy, Mr. Agyapong expressed confidence that the Akufo-Addo-led government can make huge changes within the next 2 years.
