Government is pushing for the local production of selected components used in vehicles assembled by Zonda as part of efforts to deepen Ghana’s manufacturing capacity and create more jobs under the 24-hour economy.

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang said identifying vehicle parts that could be manufactured locally would create opportunities for Ghanaian businesses and expand employment across the manufacturing value chain.

“I will be very happy going forward if we can even isolate one or two parts that we can produce locally,” she said.

The Vice President made the remarks after observing operations at the Zonda vehicle assembly facility, where workers operate in shifts around the clock.

She said the continuous operations demonstrate the potential of the government’s 24-hour economy to increase production and create more employment opportunities.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang stressed the need for closer collaboration between government and local manufacturers to identify areas where Ghanaian companies can participate in the vehicle assembly value chain.

She said producing selected components locally would help strengthen domestic businesses while building the technical skills of Ghanaian workers.

It could also create opportunities for businesses in related industries that supply parts and services to the automotive sector.

Government therefore intends to work with manufacturers and other stakeholders to identify components that can be produced locally and gradually increase Ghanaian participation in vehicle production.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen local industry, reduce reliance on imported components and retain more value within the Ghanaian economy.

Government believes expanding local content in vehicle assembly could also support the wider objectives of the 24-hour economy, particularly through increased production, industrialisation and job creation.
