The MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has declared that the information he put out in the public alleging that the military has murdered seven of his constituents is based on eyewitness accounts.
According to him, the statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) that projects the narrative that they were attacked but neutralised six men is false.
He added that some eyewitnesses to the incident, that he is in contact with, can prove the GAF’s statement was fabricated to project them as being right.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, he told host Samson Lardy Anyenini, “The point is this, what I have put out there are eyewitness accounts of exactly what happened.
“I have the names of the eyewitness… the communities, I have instructed them. They’ve gathered the witnesses. They have the names, the contact, everything.
“And trust me, I insist that the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice should go and investigate and establish exactly what happened.”
The MP’s attestations follow his petition to CHRAJ, seeking justice for seven people he claimed have been killed by the military.
He confirmed that on Tuesday, a shooting incident occurred in his constituency,
But the MP for Bawku Central claims that the military, as part of efforts to curtail the situation, chased anyone they saw, and as people took to their heels, they were shot at by the officers.
For this reason, Mr Ayariga has vowed to pursue justice for those who lost their lives due to the unfortunate incident.
However, the Ghana Armed Forces also released a statement in response to MP’s allegation, explaining contrary to the MP’s narrative, that the security forces that were deployed to restore order were attacked by the locals of the town.
In the statement issued by the GAF on Thursday, February 2, excerpts of the press statement disclosed that, “In a separate incident, sporadic firing was heard around Sabongari General Area. A Patrol Team dispatched to assess the situation spotted unknown armed men at Gozesi-Valley side in Sabongari wearing black T-shirts with Black Hoodies.
“Troops engaged them and neutralised six armed men. During the engagement, some armed men took cover in a mud house within the immediate vicinity to engage the Team.”
“One of the armed men attempted to attack the troops with a cutlass but was disarmed in the process. During the operation, a local woman found with a gunshot injury on her left hand was sent to Bawku Presbyterian Hospital by troops for treatment.”
