The Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu says there are enough cards to cover all eligible Ghanaian voters.
This, he said is because the National Identification Authority’s boss, Prof Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah has stated that there are 3.5 million cards at the custom bonded warehouse.
He added that, as Prof Attafuah said, just six months are needed to get the cards printed.
According to him, with the assurance given, there will be no difficulty in catering for the 2.5 million people left to be captured.
“Listening to Prof Attafuah, he already had 3.5 million cards in the custom bonded warehouse...it means that the 2.5 million people left to be captured, there would be enough cards to cover everybody,” he said.
Touching on the financial issues that caused the delay in printing the cards, he said the government is committed to helping NIA to get the cards released.
This conversation sprang up following the Electoral Commission’s (EC) newly proposed Constitutional Instrument (C.I) that seeks to make the Ghana Card the only identification document to be used to register as a voter if passed.
Also contained in the C.I is a requirement that persons who want to register would have to do so at an EC district office.
However, Minority has opposed the decision.
Also, the former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu recently argued that the Electoral Commission has sinned against the Constitution by not holding limited registration exercises since 2021.
According to him, this has disallowed some citizens who have come of age, the opportunity to enroll as voters.
This situation, he noted, is unacceptable for a country committed to multiparty constitutional democracy.
“Mr Speaker, for the record – 2021, 2022, 2023, Ghanaians who have attained the age of 18 years have been denied the opportunity to be captured as registered voters. This is a constitutional wrong,” he said.
For this reason, the Tamale South MP said the EC must not be allowed to lay its new Constitutional Instrument (CI) in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is demanding that the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, appears before the House over the controversial proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI).
