Power to the Treatment Plant of the Ghana Water Company (GWCL) in Dalun in the Northern region has been disconnected following the company’s indebtedness to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
The Dalun Treatment Plant is the water source for about five Districts in the Region.

The Water Company, over the years, has raised concerns over issues of stale equipment at the Treatment Plant with activities of sand winners and farmers threatening the supply of water to Greater Tamale and several other districts.
This disconnection is expected to worsen the already acute water shortage in the area.

Currently, GWCL produces 28,000, 000m3, lower than the demand of 60,000m3 by residents.
It also loses 27 per cent of treated water instead of five per cent for backwashing and dislodging processes due to the high turbidity of raw water.
The GWCL currently owes NEDCo to a tune of GH¢63 million in total with the Dalun Treatment Plant alone owing GH₵¢39.7 million.

The Ghana Water in Sunyani owes GH¢14 million, Techiman GH¢627 and Bolga 7.1 the figures for Wa were not readily available.
