There's a looming danger on the Peduase- Ayi Mensah road as stones and debris have been washed onto the road reducing the two lanes to a single lane.
Motorists who use the 5.9 kilometer long Peduase to Ayi Mensah portion off the Aburi road have thus described the situation as a death trap.
On Wednesday morning, July 5, 2023, motorists were greeted with a substantial amount of sand and stones on the road, obstructing movement of vehicles and reducing the two-lane road into a single lane.
JoyNews' correspondent, Carlos Calony, who was at the scene explained that the stones and sand on the road have forced drivers to use only the inner lane due to fear of using the outer lane considering the curvy nature of the road.
He added that the drain is choked, with rush water from up the hill spilling onto the road, and compelling drivers to slow down.
Some drivers expressed their frustration to Joy News.
“It is a major source of concern to us, I’ve used this road for years, and initially it was only water dripping from the mountain, but now both water and patches of rocks fall and pose serious danger because you can hardly see the way.”
“I believe that the construction of houses on the mountain is causing the challenge,” one driver said.
“This is a major accident waiting to happen if nothing is done to fix it. We’re only praying that the appropriate authorities will immediately take action because the net covering it doesn’t solve the issue.”
Greater Accra Regional Director of the Ghana Highway Authority, Ing. Emmanuel Odai, says the matter has come to their notice and they have called a mobile maintenance team from Suhum to immediately clear the debris on the road.
