On behalf of the government, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has extended a donation of GH¢2 million to aid those affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
This generous contribution was presented during a visit to the affected areas within the North Tongu District on Friday, October 27.
Mr Ofori-Atta in making the donation said "As a family concerned about our affected brothers and sisters, the Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the VRA, has provided a substantial amount of GHS2 million to support ongoing relief efforts. We also want to thank Ghanaians for their spontaneous response."
The District Chief Executive, Divine Osborne Fenu, expressed gratitude for the gesture.
Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Seji Saji Amedonu, shared that water levels have begun to recede. He estimated it would take about a week for the water to fully subside at its current rate.
Mr Amedonu emphasised the need for caution, adding that, "Even when the water completely recedes, there will still be work to be done before people can return to their buildings due to the high level of water contamination."
Residents who were displaced by the flood and are currently seeking shelter in schools and makeshift structures may need to wait a little longer for a definitive solution.
The government has yet to decide whether to facilitate a permanent relocation or construct more durable shelters to accommodate them.
In the wake of the flood caused by the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage over the past two weeks, affected individuals have called for government and donor support in resettlement efforts.
The Minority in Parliament has proposed relocating victims to the stalled Saglemi housing project.
However, the Deputy Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, stated that tests are underway to assess the habitability of the affected areas, and these results will inform decisions made by the committee.
