The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of some candidates from 235 schools for using Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) to generate answers in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a press release, the Examination Council said it noticed that some students used A.I. in answering the questions.
“Some subject results of candidates from 235 schools have been withheld for collusion and the use of artificial intelligence generated answers. These cases are still under investigation,” the December 18 release read.
The body noted that these results have since been withheld, and investigations are underway. Depending on the findings, results will either be released or canceled.
“The withheld results of these candidates may be released or canceled depending on the outcome of investigations,” the release added.
Additionally, 3,647 subject results of candidates have been cancelled for bringing foreign materials into examination centres, and 839 candidates had their entire results also cancelled for possessing of mobile phone in the examination hall.
The Examination Council also added that the results of 4,280 candidates’ subjects and the entire results of 1,005 have been withheld for various suspected offences.
