The DHL Global Forwarding’s maiden Cross-Border Cycling Tour 2024 concluded successfully on December 29, marking a significant step in using sports to promote regional collaboration and integration in Africa.

The event brought together 58 cyclists from Ghana, Togo, Senegal, Benin, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, creating a platform that combined endurance, teamwork, and cross-border engagement.

Spanning two days, the tour covered 340 kilometres across Ghana and Togo. Cyclists embarked on a 170km journey from Tema, Ghana, to Lomé, Togo, on the first day.

The second day involved a 100km ride from Lomé to Vume, Ghana, followed by a 70km transport to Accra.

Among the participants were notable para-cyclists Macoumba Sarr and Edmond Sanka from Senegal and Adam Atcha, a DHL Global Forwarding employee who overcame amputation to participate.

DHL’s “Yellow Machines” cycling team also took part, exemplifying resilience, and determination, and showcasing the true spirit of sportsmanship.

More than a sporting event, the cycling tour highlighted the importance of free movement within the West African sub-region. Participants experienced border checkpoints, customs processes, and security patrols firsthand, providing practical insights into regional cross-border operations.

To advocate for smoother integration to enhance trade across Africa, DHL Global Forwarding plans to compile these observations into a report to share with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Speaking about the initiative, Serigne Ndanck Mbaye, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DHL Global Forwarding for West Africa, emphasised its broader purpose.

“When people move, goods follow. This tour demonstrates how breaking barriers can drive progress and unite communities,” he said.

Fred Duodu, Head of Road Freight at DHL Global Forwarding, lauded the planning and execution of the event, calling it a reflection of the company’s commitment to connecting neighbouring countries and improving regional logistics.

The tour was made possible through contributions from key stakeholders, including, Salah Kalmoni, Executive Director of Silver Star Tower Ltd., Shaaban Mohammed, Secretary General of the Ghana Cycling Federation, the Togolese Ambassador to Ghana, volunteers, and support teams.

This initiative also showcased DHL Global Forwarding’s dedication to strengthening relationships and enhancing connectivity.

Known for its expertise in Ocean Freight, Air Freight, Road Freight, Customs Clearance, oversized cargo transportation and supply chain solutions, the company which is part of the DHL Group used the event to demonstrate its broader mission of building partnerships that drive growth and create shared experiences.

Plans are already underway for the next edition in 2025, with discussions on the possibility of expanding the route to include cities like Cotonou in Benin and Lagos in Nigeria.

Organisers are optimistic about attracting more participants and building on the success of this inaugural tour, which has set a strong foundation for future events.
