Ahmed Ibrahim, the Local Government Minister nominee, has stated that he will not tolerate any disrespect towards Members of Parliament (MPs) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
In his remarks on Tuesday, January 21 before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, he stressed the importance of fostering respectful relationships between MPs and DCEs to ensure effective governance.
"I will not allow any DCE to disrespect any Member of Parliament," Mr Ibrahim asserted. "In the same way, I’ll ensure there is a common platform for smooth communication between MPs and DCEs."
He emphasised the need for cooperation between the two groups to ensure that development projects and policies are effectively implemented at the local level.
He highlighted the incidence of some MMDCEs deliberately undermining MPs for them to lose their seats because they also have an interest in contesting the same seats.
The Minister nominee further highlighted that mutual respect and collaboration between MPs and DCEs are essential to advancing the goals of the government and addressing the needs of local communities.
By creating a common platform for dialogue, he believes it will encourage better coordination and understanding between the two offices.
Mr Ibrahim stated that this reflects his commitment to maintaining a harmonious and productive working relationship between MPs and DCEs, which he sees as crucial for fostering national development and ensuring the delivery of essential services to the public.
