The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has urged President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointment of Dr Johnson Asiama as acting Governor of the Bank of Ghana, citing unresolved concerns regarding his past involvement in the financial sector crisis.
According to the movement, Dr Asiama's appointment raises transparency and accountability issues, given his previous legal troubles linked to Ghana’s banking sector reforms.
He was among nine individuals charged in connection with the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank, facing allegations including fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering, conspiracy, and violations of the Bank of Ghana Act.
Although the charges against him have been dropped by the new government, the CDM argues that his reinstatement in such a critical role could undermine ethical governance and public confidence in Ghana’s financial institutions.
The movement maintains that leadership appointments within the country’s financial sector should be based on merit and integrity to restore trust in regulatory institutions.
Furthermore, the CDM warns that failing to revoke Dr Asiama’s appointment could negatively impact investor confidence in Ghana’s financial system.
It has also indicated its intention to escalate the matter by petitioning the European Union Representative in Ghana, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank if its concerns are not addressed.
