The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has apologised to the MP for Klottey Korle, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, her entire family, and the chiefs and people of Anlo State following the controversial “daughter of a murderer” comment made on the floor of Parliament.
Speaking to Members of Parliament on Tuesday, 4th March, one month after the comment was made on the floor of Parliament by an unidentified MP, Mr Bagbin said: “In light of this incident, I extend my deepest apologies to Hon. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, former First Lady of Ghana and widow of our late industrious President, the family, the chiefs, and all the good people of Anlo Dukor and Anlo land.”
He expressed his regret, stating, “It is a sad situation when one serving their country must endure such indignity.”
The controversy stemmed from a derogatory remark aimed at Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle and daughter of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
The incident occurred during a parliamentary session on 4th February, amid heated discussions commemorating the 60th anniversary of Joseph Boakye Danquah's death.
As Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the House, an unidentified male voice from the parliamentary backbench interrupted, shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”
Aside from the apology, the Speaker also announced the launch of a formal investigation to identify the MP responsible for the statement, and warned that failure by the MP to show up will result in stiffer punishment when the person is found out.
