Renowned energy expert and former Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Dr. Samiu Kwadwo Nuamah, has been appointed the new Executive Director of the African Institute of Energy and Sustainability (AIES).
AIES is a leading research and consultancy institute focused on advancing sustainable energy practices across Africa. Dr. Nuamah’s appointment is expected to strengthen the institute’s commitment to research, policy development, and clean energy transitions on the continent.
Dr. Nuamah, an academic, energy strategist, and policy advisor, has extensive experience working in both the UK and Ghana, across the public and private sectors. He has previously held significant roles at RWE npower and Genser Energy in the UK and served as a lecturer at the University of Ghana and Nottingham Trent University.
Additionally, he is a former member of Ghana’s Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, where he contributed to policy reforms in energy and natural resources.
Speaking after his appointment, Dr. Nuamah said “Africa stands at a crossroads in its energy future. As we work towards energy security and sustainability, we must ensure that policies and industry practices are guided by research, innovation, and environmental stewardship. At AIES, we are dedicated to equipping policymakers, industry players, and communities with the knowledge and strategies needed to transition to a cleaner and more resilient energy system.”
AIES, which works in the areas of energy consultancy, environmental impact assessment (EIA), research, and technical training, has stated that Dr. Nuamah’s appointment aligns with its goal of promoting a low-carbon economy and evidence-based energy policies.
Dr. Nuamah holds a BSc from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), an MSc from Cranfield University, and an EngD in Energy and Environmental Studies from the University of Nottingham.
Vincent Annan, Chief Executive Officer of the Sekondi-Takoradi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (STCCI), which collaborates closely with energy sector stakeholders, described the appointment as timely.
“He brings the right mix of academic insight and industry experience to take AIES to the next level. We believe he will strengthen policy dialogue and deepen collaboration across Africa’s energy ecosystem,” Mr. Annan said.
Dr. Nuamah is expected to lead new partnerships, expand renewable energy research, and support governments, corporations, and communities in achieving energy sustainability.
His leadership marks a significant step towards accelerating Africa’s energy transition and positioning AIES as a key player in the continent’s clean energy future.
