Drivers at the Circle Obra Spot are divided over the performance of the President John Mahama-led administration in fulfilling its 120-day social contract.
While some applaud the President for keeping most of his promises, others remain unimpressed by the progress made since he assumed office.
Before taking office, President Mahama outlined 25 key promises under what he termed a “social contract,” covering areas such as governance, the economy, energy, and social intervention.
Among the notable pledges was the scrapping of the betting tax, a move that has stirred mixed reactions among commercial drivers.
Speaking to JoyNews on Wednesday, May 7, Kwame, a driver with eight years of experience, expressed excitement over the removal of the betting tax, saying it allows him to enjoy his betting wins without deductions.
He also praised the President’s commitment to a lean government.
“It’s commendable,” he said. “If he continues like this, it will really help the economy.”
However, his colleague Michael had a starkly different view. He believes the removal of the betting tax has worsened youth unemployment and encouraged idleness.
“The youth don’t like to work now. They’re always seen on their mobile devices betting,” he said, calling for the reintroduction of the tax and an increase to 50 per cent to discourage excessive gambling.
