President John Mahama has inaugurated a nine-member transitional management committee to supervise the formal handover of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the University of Ghana (UG).
The move marks a significant milestone in the government’s broader agenda to strengthen medical education, clinical research, and specialised healthcare delivery in the country.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra, President Mahama stated that the transfer was a necessary shift from operational oversight by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to full integration under the University of Ghana’s management.
“The next phase of our vision calls for the full integration of the UGMC into the University of Ghana's governance and operational structures,” he said.
“This is not a mere administrative action. It is a strategic alignment designed to promote synergy between clinical service delivery, teaching and research; to enhance institutional efficiency through harmonized leadership and resource management; to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between medical professionals, researchers and academics; and most importantly, to create a truly world-class teaching hospital that serves the needs of both Ghana and the wider West African sub-region.”
The transitional committee, composed of health and academic experts, is tasked with overseeing a smooth and coordinated transfer of UGMC’s governance, ensuring the facility is positioned to function as an advanced teaching and research hospital under the university’s umbrella.
