Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato-Forson, has hinted that the National Investment Bank (NIB) will be listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange in the future.
This means part of the bank will be sold to Ghanaians, but via the capital market.
Presenting the Mid-Year Review Budget, Dr. Forson said the government has taken steps to inject a total of GH¢450.00 million in cash; issued marketable bonds with a face value of about GH¢1.5 billion, and transferred the GH¢500 million Government of Ghana’s shares in Nestle Ghana Ltd to the National Investment Bank.
According to him, these transfers have significantly improved the Capital Adequacy Ratio from negative 53.13% at the end of 2024 to positive 23% in May 2025.
“We have preserved depositor’s funds valued at GH¢6.4 billion. We have saved over 900 direct jobs at the National Investment Bank. We have preserved an indigenous Ghanaian bank”, he said.
He added that the government has prepared a Forward-Looking Overarching Restructuring Plan for the National Investment Bank to put the bank on a sustainable path of profitability.
The plan also aims to enhance board independence and objectivity, strengthen risk management, promote accountability and transparency, prevent insider dominance and improve strategic decision-making.
It will strengthen the corporate governance framework and systems; improve enterprise risk management and controls; establish a modern business model; revamp operational strategy; improve financial performance and institute enhanced supervisory measures.
