The Ministry of Sports and Recreation will on Monday, 29th September 2025, inaugurate the newly constituted Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC) at its conference room following the dissolution of the current Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) board on Friday.
Ahead of the event, Sports Minister Kofi Adams met with some members of the committee, notably the venerable Azumah Nelson and others. The meeting was led by the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The engagement served as a precursor to the official inauguration to replace the now defunct board of the boxing governing body.
The establishment of the Interim Management Committee follows the tragic death of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on 29th March 2025.
In the aftermath, the Ministry set up an independent investigative committee chaired by Rtd. Amarkai Amarteifio to examine the circumstances of the incident and broader challenges confronting professional boxing in Ghana.
The committee later presented a 100-page report containing key findings and recommendations to strengthen safety, discipline, and integrity in the sport.
In his address to the committee members, the Minister commended them for accepting the responsibility and underscored the urgency of reforms.
He noted:
“This normalisation process is not about personalities; it is about the future of our sport. We are determined to restore boxing to a state of professionalism, safety and international respect.”
He further stressed the need for immediate medical protocols, updated health records of boxers, the establishment of a Medical Commission, and reinforced doping control measures in collaboration with the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).
He tasked the committee to operate swiftly, transparently, and without bias, expressing hope that structured boxing activity will resume before the end of the year.
The Ministry has also prepared a formal white paper outlining its official position on the investigative report, which the committee is expected to implement under ministerial supervision.
The official inauguration is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday at the Ministry’s Conference Room.
