Ghana’s first mobile telecommunications operator to deploy an LTE network, Surfline has selected China’s Huawei Technologies for its expansion works.
Currently, Surfline’s data service is only available in Accra and Tema in the Greater Accra Region.
The announcement was made at the just ended Mobile World Congress.
This was after a rigorous evaluation process which saw Huawei emerge the top vendor.
Surfline is already using the Chinese company’s devises for its mifi, modem and other devices and the it is also known worldwide for its success in frequency division duplex (FDD).
Once completed, Surfline will boast 700+ cell sites, making it one of the world’s largest independent LTE networks, a feat for the country’s only telecommunications network that is wholly owned by Ghanaians.
The expansion move is also part of demands by the regulator, the National Communications Authority (NCA) as well as the company’s ambitions to meet growing demands for its services.
Surfline gets $30m to expand LTE network
Vantage Mezzanine has announced it concluded a transaction with Ghana operator Surfline Communications to provide USD 30 million of expansion capital to the company together with a fund co-investor.
The funds will be used for the on-going expansion of Surfline’s LTE network in Ghana as well as to grow its product distribution and marketing network.
