President John Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a more inclusive society for persons with disabilities, announcing that a new initiative to distribute rechargeable motorised wheelchairs and directing all ministries to ensure full compliance with Ghana’s Disability Act.
Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities initiative in Accra, Mr Mahama said the new measures are part of his government’s broader agenda to remove barriers, promote empowerment, and foster equality for all Ghanaians.
“We intend to introduce a system for distributing rechargeable motorised wheelchairs for persons with disability,” the President announced.
“I have directed all ministers of state to review their obligations under the Disability Act and present action plans for full compliance within the shortest possible time.”
President Mahama emphasised that the transformation of national attitudes toward persons with disabilities must move beyond sympathy to genuine partnership and inclusion.
“I call on the private sector, civil society, our development partners, universities and the media to join hands in this noble mission,” he said.
“Let us transform our national attitude from commiseration to partnership, from exclusion to empowerment, and from sympathy to solidarity.”
