President of the government-sponsored PhD students in the United Kingdom, Prince Komla Bansah, says more than GH₵5.7 million is urgently required to settle outstanding tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, November 10, Mr Bansah disclosed that the 36 Ghanaian PhD candidates in the UK collectively owe about £400,000 in unpaid fees.
“For the 2025/2026, which we are almost three months into now, our estimation is that it will require almost £400,000 to address the school fees alone for the PhDs. And so we have submitted all the data to the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat,” he said.
He added that the Secretariat has yet to address the issue due to a lack of funds.
“I also understand that they don't have the money, so they are not able to look at the data. The ball is now in the court of the government or the finance minister to really engage all of us,” he noted.
Mr Bansah also highlighted the deteriorating living conditions of the scholars, citing delays in both tuition payments and monthly stipends. He said some students have faced eviction notices and others have been forced to rely on food banks to survive.
He stressed that timely financial support is essential to ease the growing hardship among the affected students.
