The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, popularly known as 'King Zuba,' has announced the extension of the standardised prefabricated container design policy to other parts of Kumasi, especially areas where structures have been erected.

Speaking to Joy News on the sidelines of the KMA General Assembly meeting, Mr Boadi said the initiative forms part of a broader city beautification programme.

He said the pilot phase of the policy is currently underway around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, aimed at bringing uniformity, order, and aesthetics to commercial structures across the metropolis.

This comes amidst the Assembly’s demolition exercise, which occurred on July 31 around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium enclave, where occupants of unauthorised structures were directed to vacate the area as part of measures to improve sanitation, safety, and the general outlook of the city.

“We will extend this standard to other parts of Kumasi where container structures have been mounted as and when we get there and deem it necessary to beautify the city,” he said.

He also announced that from 2027, any individual or organisation seeking to mount a container structure within Kumasi will be required to obtain an approved standard design from the KMA before construction begins.

According to him, the initiative is fully backed by the Assembly’s bye-law, having received endorsement from all Assembly members.

"As part of our meeting, the assembly approved a motion that effective January 2027, anyone want to install a container in Kumasi must obtain a standard design from the KMA Spatial or Physical Planning Department," Mr Boadi stated

The mayor also disclosed plans to develop a well-organised trading structure at the Poku Trading Area to provide a more suitable environment for market women while enhancing the area’s appearance.

"We have taken note of traders at the Poku Trading Area, particularly those who sell meat on the floor. We cannot continue to allow our market women to trade under such poor conditions. We will therefore provide trading structures for them at no cost. This project forms part of our commitment to create decent, well-structured spaces to make trading easier and safer for them and to beautify that part of the city.

In a bid to tackle congestion, he said a major decongestion exercise will commence along a section of Alabar on August 17.

"From August 17, we will begin a targeted decongestion exercise at Alabar. This is not about harassing traders. It is about restoring order, ensuring free movement of people and vehicles, and preventing avoidable accidents, he explained.

The MCE described the move and other interventions as key to his administration’s vision of repositioning Kumasi as a cleaner, safer, and better-planned metropolis that reflects its historical importance.
