Security consultant Professor Kwesi Aning has called on authorities to expose and punish individuals who profit from conflicts in the country, insisting that doing so will serve as a powerful deterrent.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, Prof Aning reacted to the President’s concerns about the growing number of chieftaincy and land disputes — issues he described as a significant challenge for the state.
He stressed that while institutions must continue to fulfil their mandates in resolving these disputes, it is equally crucial to hold accountable those who fuel and benefit from them, especially people involved in the sale of weapons and other illicit activities.
Publicly naming such individuals, he noted, would help dismantle the incentives that sustain ongoing conflicts.
"Violence has become profitable in Ghana. We have to make sure that those who profit from violence, from indiscipline, from the sales of guns are punished, and when they are punished, it should be published to serve as a deterrent," he said on The Pulse.
"We can resource the statutory security forces as much as possible, give the stakeholders and the infrastructure all the money, but if we can't use the law to deter, to punish and to ensure that people comply, then we are just wasting our time," he added.
